Good to know
Before you do anything else
SSDI is a federal program run by the Social Security Administration (SSA). A claim usually moves through four levels: the initial application, reconsideration, a hearing before an administrative law judge, and review by the Appeals Council. Many first applications are denied, and many people who appeal are approved later.
The deadline to ask for the next level is generally 60 days from the date you receive a denial notice, so keep the notice and note the date. Federal law sets how disability lawyers are paid: a fee comes out of past-due benefits only if you win, and SSA caps it (25 percent of past-due benefits, up to a limit SSA sets).
